Bioinformatics

Description

Bioinformatics is a new, rapidly growing science which applies computer technology for the acquisition, storage, analysis, and dissemination of biological and clinical data. Bioinformatics integrates various areas of study, including computer sciences, molecular biology, biotechnology and mathematics.

Bioinformatics is used by two important large-scale fields which are genomics and proteomics. Genomics points to the sequencing and interpretation of all of the genomic entities, including genes and transcripts, in an organism. Proteomics refers to the analysis of the entire set of proteins or proteome. Moreover, metabolomics and transcriptomics are other areas of biology where bioinformatics is being applied. Thus, bioinformatics is the key to understand complex biological systems.
